On September 8, 2024, We gathered in the verdant gardens of the Velaslavasay Panorama for a special vocal workshop with Berlin’s yodeling queen, Kutzkelina.

The nature of yodeling being both dynamic and energy-efficient has lent the technique to be utilized in communities across the globe – in solo and collective song and as a form of non-verbal communication projected over long distances.

With Kutzkelina’s depth of knowledge and playful approach, this workshop guided participants through the fundamental mechanics of yodeling, fostered experimentation with various singing techniques, and explored the expressive modes of their employment in cultural traditions ranging regionally from Japan to Belarus – diverse musical landscapes in which the yodel lives, uniquely.

Kutzkelina
Kutzkelina is a multidisciplinary musician, composer, and actress based in Berlin. From her early childhood growing up in the dark forests of the Harz Mountains in the GDR, she has been singing and yodeling, as well as composing for a wide variety of musical projects that center around the voice. She founded Jodelschule Kreuzberg (Kreuzberg Yodel School) in Berlin, and travels worldwide teaching, as well as studying, yodeling and advanced vocal techniques, with a focus on the breaking of the voice in traditional music.

Velaslavasay Panorama
Drawing on the illustrious history of the great panorama paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries, The Velaslavasay Panorama is an exhibition hall, theatre and garden dedicated to the production and presentation of unusual visual experiences, including those of the 360-degree variety and linear moving panoramas. In addition to serving as a showcase for panoramic works and living garden wonders, The Velaslavasay Panorama also hosts events, including lectures, film screenings, workshops and performances.
