Vision of a Trio

Saturday, December 14th, 2024

The Stringed Crane Conservatory looks forward to celebrating the conclusion of one year and clearing the ground for the seasons ahead with an evening of music rooted in jazz and other traditions of improvisation.

Seminal LA punk and jazz guitarist Joe Baiza, an artist who has long stirred the SCC’s interest in the confluences of traditions, has conceived of and assembled a special trio for this event. Baiza will be joined by two other wholly remarkable musicians: singer, composer and violinist Petra Haden, and composer and pianist Steve Gregoropoulos. We are very pleased to invite you to the saz workshop where the three will share with us new compositions and improvisations.

Joe Baiza
Native of Wilmington, CA with roots in blues and jazz, Baiza’s path as a musician traces an idiosyncratic through line, bringing jazz traditions with him into the burgeoning LA punk rock scene and beyond. Founder of numerous bands of critical renown, including Saccharine Trust, Universal Congress Of, and Mecolodiacs, and collaborator in innumerable projects, today Baiza continues to inspire, influence, and collaborate with new generations of musicians.

Petra Haden
While never following a path of formal musical training, Petra was born into a life of music as a daughter of the late, legendary jazz bassist and composer Charlie Haden. She was first inspired to pick up the violin at around eight years old, and over the last three decades has established a singular reputation for creativity and versatility: a unique niche that's allowed her to apply her multiple talents to a diverse array of music. As a singer, instrumentalist and composer, Petra has built an impressively varied and accomplished discography encompassing her work as part of the alt-rock quartet That Dog, collaborations with a broad array of acts, and a series of her own releases, which often showcase her unique talent for constructing complex, evocative A-Capella arrangements by inventively layering multiple tracks of her own voice. Petra's voice and violin appear on albums and projects with the likes of Bill Frisell, Mike Watt, The Decemberists, Beck, Susanna Hoffs, Rufus Wainwright, Rickie Lee Jones, The Haden Triplets, Spain, Sunn O))), and more.

Steve Gregoropoulos

After studying composition with Schoenberg’s amanuensis and cousin Richard Hoffmann, Steve toured and migrated across the continent and the Atlantic with his band The Wild Stares before eventually settling in Los Angeles where they morphed into the chamber orchestra WACO. He then joined Lavender Diamond with Becky Stark, playing shows from London to Mongolia, and releasing albums with Matador, Rough Trade, Petaluma and OK Go’s label Paracadute. Steve currently plays with a number of bands, including the Grabs, which he formed with Eleni Mandell and Blondie’s Nigel Harrison, and the Blonde Moondust with legendary punk diva Tequila Mockingbird. This year’s performances have included a string quartet for the Night Tongue series of salons and a composition for bell choir. Currently he’s completing an operatic setting of Dylan Thomas’s Under Milkwood. He is continually busy with film scores and classical works.

This program is supported, in part, by grants from the Olympic Park Neighborhood Council, City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Department of Arts and Culture, and as part of Creative Recovery LA, an initiative funded by the American Rescue Plan.
