"My rufous crane, why do you roam through the air..."
The crane holds deep significance in cultures throughout the world. Across those of the Anatolian region, the crane is a symbol of holiness, a communicator of messages between divine and material realms, and between relatives and lovers separated by great distances. It appears in stories, folk songs, and spiritual traditions.
The traditional Anatolian long necked lute, the saz, is itself regarded in a similar way, as a transmitter; of messages, emotions, ideas. The crane of this region is the Demoiselle crane, referred to in Turkish as "Telli turna," or "Stringed crane." The saz is also referred to as the "stringed crane."
The Stringed Crane Conservatory aims to preserve, celebrate, and engage the public with underrepresented musical, artistic and cultural traditions by 1) acting as a repository of knowledge where an instrument making tradition lives, is practiced, and is accessible to the public, and 2) organizing and hosting performances, cinematic presentations, workshops, and discussions, all within the environment of a traditional saz making workshop.
